Executive Summary
The Director of Elementary Programs, on behalf of the Superintendent of Schools, hereby requests the Board to approve the purchase of the Magnetic Reading K-2 Program.
The district is requesting to purchase the Magnetic Reading Program using funds from the Supplemental School Improvement Grant, as well as the K12 Comprehensive Evidence-Based Reading Plan allocation. This program is aligned to BEST Standards, the Science of Reading and provides foundational skills to close gaps in reading. The program includes an alignment to the adopted state-approved curriculum.
By strengthening foundational skills within the primary grades, the students will be better prepared to continue the path to greater proficiency in Reading. The white paper, which provides an overview of the agenda item, is a mid-year data highlight spotlighting the impact Magnetic Reading has had on the phonics growth of the K-2 students at Suncoast Elementary. Furthermore, teacher satisfaction data has also been included.
To date, schools have been able to utilize their Title I funding to purchase Magnetic Reading. Through the use of the Supplemental School Improvement Grant and the K12 Comprehensive Evidence-Based Reading Plan allocation, we are able to provide this beneficial science of reading based resource to all of our elementary schools for grades K-2 to utilize during both whole group instruction and during intervention groups as determined by student need.
This is a current expenditure of $422,840.24 and they anticipate the possibility of spending up to $500,000.00 due to possible additional materials later in the year.
