Executive Summary

The Director of Student Services on behalf of the Superintendent of Schools, hereby requests the Board approve the Memorandum of Understanding between American Institutes for Research (AIR) and Hernando County School District for the Second Step Middle School Project that is funded through a research grant by the United States Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences. Once approved, this program is for three (3) years.

Second Step has long been recognized as a continued valuable resource for students in Hernando County Schools and is an approved evidence-based curriculum for grades 6-8. The American Institute for Research (AIR) will work closely with Hernando County Schools Staff with implementing the units in grades 6-8 at participating middle schools. There is no financial obligation to implement the Second Step Middle School Program.

Financial Impact

The cost for this agenda item is $ 0, see attached budget sheet. The cost for the previous fiscal year was $ 0.

If expenditure is not currently budgeted, this will serve as the budget amendment when Board approved. If the agenda item includes the purchase of goods or services, the funds requested are an anticipated amount and may fluctuate depending on such factors as current market conditions, product availability, additional funding sources, and the needs of the District. Should the actual cost exceed the anticipated amount, the Board approves the additional cost, after review by the superintendent, but not in excess of the funds available in the site’s approved annual budget.
