Executive Summary

The Director of Technology and Information Services, on behalf of the Superintendent of Schools, hereby requests the Board approve the purchase of the software license renewal of Sophos Security Central with core professional services from CDWG.  Sophos provides next generation, vital and mandatory comprehensive endpoint protection, server and network security and antivirus/malware protection for all computers and servers district wide.

As is evidenced by the sharp increase in the number of school districts and governmental agencies in Florida as well as nationwide that have fallen victim to intrusions, data loss and ransomware, the State of Florida and the Department of Justice and FBI have issued warnings to schools that they are now a primary target.

To present the best security posture possible, protect our student and staff data, and meet the level of security required by both the state and our insurance carriers, a comprehensive security suite must be in place and maintained to industry standards.  By using the software and services of Sophos we can always have the advantage of the next generation security and intrusion protection and a large team of seasoned security professionals working on our behalf without the exorbitant costs of labor and equipment we would incur trying to do this in house. Further by using this service we may reduce our insurance premium, and it may be possible to shift some liability off the District.

Financial Impact

See attached budget sheet.

If expenditure is not currently budgeted, this will serve as the budget amendment when Board approved. If the agenda item includes the purchase of goods or services, the funds requested are an anticipated amount and may fluctuate depending on such factors as current market conditions, product availability, additional funding sources, and the needs of the District.  Should the actual cost exceed the anticipated amount, the Board approves the additional cost, after review by the superintendent, but not in excess of the funds available in the site’s approved annual budget.
