Executive Summary

The Director of Student Services, on behalf of the Superintendent of Schools, respectfully requests Board approval for out-of-state travel for Jill Kolasa and Angela Miller Royal to attend and present at the 114th Annual Conference of the International Association for Truancy and Dropout Prevention (IATDP) in Corpus Christi, Texas, from October 17, 2026, through October 21, 2026.

Jill Kolasa and Angela Miller Royal currently serve as members of the IATDP Board of Directors, representing Florida and supporting national efforts to address truancy, chronic absenteeism, and dropout prevention. At the conference, they will present “Controlling What We Can: Reducing Chronic Absenteeism, Truancy, and Dropout Risks,” highlighting Hernando County School District’s strategies focused on attendance improvement, early intervention, student engagement, mental health supports, and community partnerships.

Participation in this conference will provide an opportunity to share district best practices, collaborate with national leaders, and bring back evidence-based strategies to further strengthen student support systems and reduce attendance barriers.

Funding will be provided through the approved Mental Health Assistance Allocation.

Financial Impact

See attached budget sheet.

If expenditure is not currently budgeted, this will serve as the budget amendment when Board approved. If the agenda item includes the purchase of goods or services, the funds requested are an anticipated amount and may fluctuate depending on such factors as current market conditions, product availability, additional funding sources, and the needs of the District. Should the actual cost exceed the anticipated amount, the Board approves the additional cost, after review by the superintendent, but not in excess of the funds available in the site’s approved annual budget.
